Tiered data plans are here for good and yes, it is unfortunate. Thankfully, many of us were able to keep our unlimited plans back when tiers were introduced, however, we would be foolish to believe that we will have them forever. We haven't been given a time frame as to when our grandfathered plans will run out, but you can imagine that it could happen in the very near future. We know that family share plans will be here this summer, which might also be a perfect opportunity for VZW to cut off unlimited for good.

When that time comes, and if family plans aren't of interest, you will have to pick a tier. Verizon is currently running another of their "double data" promos that would get you into 4GB of data for $30 a month, a price that beats almost any other carrier's tiers. We have already seen one of these promos come and go, so it's not like Big Red is scared to run them from time to time. Let's just hope that they plan to run one again on the day of reckoning.

And on that day, you may be worried that it won't be enough. It certainly won't be for those that tether on the regular, but if you take VZW's word in the infographic below, most of you may have more data than you know what to do with.

CyanogenMod 9 and MIUI 4 ported to Tegra powered HTC One X

Growing tired of HTC Sense 4.0 on your Tegra 3 powered HTC One X? Over the weekend, the Android development community managed to get CyanogenMod 9 and MIUI 4 up and running on HTC's quad-core flagship phone. As always, the first versions of these ROMs are not perfect.

CyanogenMod 9 is slow to connect to 3G and currently does not feature any camera or WiFi hotspot capabilities. On the plus side, the developers have remapped the buttons on the HTC One X so that the multitasking button now acts as the menu button. This eliminated the black menu bar which would appear across the bottom of the screen on applications which were not optimized for Android 4.0.

While MIUI may not have as many fans as CyanogenMod, a leaked beta of MIUI 4 for the One X is fully functional. The developers managed to keep the stock HTC camera, gallery and music (including Beats Audio) applications in order to retain the unique media capabilities of the HTC One X.

If you're the adventurous type, click on the source links below and install a custom ROM on your Tegra 3 powered HTC One X. Are any of you planning on running custom ROMs on your HTC One X or will you be sticking to the stock HTC Sense 4.0 experience?

Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus users reporting data connectivity issues – fix already in the works

Anyone planning on buying the newly launched Galaxy Nexus from Sprint may want to hold off for a week or two. A handful of new Galaxy Nexus owners are reporting issues connecting to Sprint's 3G network. From what we can tell, affected users are able to send and receive phone calls and text messages, but the data connection to the phone simply remains in "connecting" status without ever making a complete connection.

Several affected users have been given replacement phones at local Sprint stores, but others have been turned away since a fix for the issue is apparently already in the works. No specifics about the software update have been revealed, but a Sprint Community moderator claims that Sprint is hoping to have the issue resolved by early next week.

Sprint/Samsung are aware of this problem and will be releasing a software update to resolve the issue. Can’t commit to a date yet, but they are trying really hard to get it released early next week. Sorry for your troubles.ModeratorSprint Community

Have any of you experienced any data connectivity issues with the Sprint Galaxy Nexus? It seems a bit ironic that Sprint's first 4G LTE phone can't even get a 3G connection.

Google’s JBQ speaks out on Android updates, Google selling the Galaxy Nexus and more

Jean-Baptiste Queru is the technical lead for the Android Open Source Project at Google. When he talks, we tend to listen. Many a time now, JBQ (as he's more commonly known) has come to the aid of speculating bloggers and explained situations with updates, Nexus devices and much more. Today, with the Sony Tablet S getting updated to Android 4 and Google selling the Galaxy Nexus directly recently, JBQ took a moment to share his thoughts on updates on Google+.

When it comes to Sony updating their Tablet S, JBQ says that the five months time it took them to complete the update was, "very reasonable." He continues on to say that the changes from Android 3 (Honeycomb) and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) are huge. A lot has changed from previous versions of Android to now, and the only reason Sony has managed to stay as up to date as they are is thanks to their contributions to the AOSP. ASUS' updates have also been very timely, but that's because of the tight relationship between ASUS and NVIDIA. Both companies are extremely focused on keeping their products up to date.

Continuing on the subject of updates, JBQ isn't too happy on how the Nexus program is playing out. But Google selling the Nexus directly will help that:

The part that blows my mind is that some variants of the Google-engineered flagship devices still haven’t received Ice Cream Sandwich (or are stuck with older versions of Ice Cream Sandwich) because of delays introduced by operator approvals. I’m very glad that Google is back in the business of selling phones directly without any middlemen to interfere, and I’ll be even happier when I see that program expanded to more countries.JBQGoogle

Personally, I take two important things out of this. For one, Google is most definitely aware of the woes delayed updates cause. Especially when it comes to Nexus devices. And number two, those delays aren't going to change if you buy a carrier regulated device. If you really, truly want your updates from Google, you have to buy your device from Google.

While none of that may be new information (in fact, it's starting to feel like we're beating a dead horse here), it's especially relevant after this past weeks news of Google deciding to sell the Galaxy Nexus directly. Even the support website for the Google sold GSM Nexus will be directly managed by Google. And that's all there is to it.

What do you think of a five month wait between updates for carrier regulated devices? Is that too long, or is it worth the wait? And while we're at it, is anyone planning to buy an unlocked Nexus from Google? Have you already? Let us know in the comments.

First Look at the HTC Incredible 4G LTE Otterbox Defender Case

incredible 4g otterbox2 650x546 First Look at the HTC Incredible 4G LTE Otterbox Defender Case

At this point, we are starting to pencil in a release of the DROID Incredible 4G LTE some time during the next couple of weeks. A finished build of the device has been photo'd a handful of times, the DroidDoes.com page for it went live earlier in the week, and now we are seeing cases from players like Otterbox arrive in retail packaging. We had a targeted date at one point that referred to April 26 as being the day, but with that being yesterday and no phone in sight, we will focus on next week or the one after.

Verizon released the Spectrum and RAZR MAXX back in early Q1 and nothing important since. With it being 1 month into Q2, you have to assume that something will arrive any day now. The DROID RAZR HD is a possibility, but we are expecting the Incredible 4G LTE to launch well before it.

As a recap, this device will sport a 4.3″ qHD LCD display, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC chip, 4G LTE, 8GB of onboard storage, SD card slot to add on more, and 1GB of RAM. It's almost like an HTC One S (our review), but with different screen tech, LTE, NFC and expandable storage. So yeah, that's basically us saying that the Inc 4G is better.

Let's hope so because we're moving on. Along with that feature, push notifications have also been added for interactions that your individual tweets have. Have you just been retweeted or favorited? CrApp of the Week: Samsung’s Pure Breeze is still a pure bust

Last September, I took a look at Samsung's home screen replacement called Pure Breeze Launcher. At the time, I went easy on them. It was pretty bad when it first came out, but I praised Samsung nonetheless for "thinking outside the box" (ugh). But that was then. And this is now. Pure Breeze Launcher has been tweaked, updated to work with Android 4 and boasts a "new modern user experience." Too bad it still sucks.

The theory behind Pure Breeze Launcher isn't all that terrible. A minimal way to keep all your apps organized, giving you constant access to what you use the most. But the execution is so poor, I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell Samsung is really going for.

If I had to describe Pure Breeze Launcher in one sentence? It's like Samsung took Apple's always-open-app-drawer approach, added the ability to make folders into an entire page and color coded it all. If I had to elaborate? Actually, one sentence is fine. There's nothing to this launcher. Some frosted glass accents, crazy names for everything (the Kite?!) and a whole lot of bugs.

Screenshot 2012 04 26 14 59 50 180x300 CrApp of the Week: Samsung's Pure Breeze is still a pure bustEven though it says Pure Breeze Launcher was updated for Android 4, it barely works on my Nexus S. Icons keep disappearing. I can't scroll between pages, err groups, err the Kite. No wait… it didn't start me off in the Kite. It started me off in the all apps page. So how do I get to the Kite… OK, press home again. So then to get to my groups… No, that doesn't make sense, maybe I… Well my groups are supposed to be here… What?! There's no icons, but pressing this blank area takes me to my groups… Well then how do I… SCREW IT.

But hey! You can have wallpapers now! Samsung is kind enough to start you off with a wallaper of a guy wearing some Adidas jersey shorts and an athletic shirt (at least I think that's the PC term for "wife-beater") fishing off a pier. Now that's art.

Look, I really wanted to like Pure Breeze Launcher. I swear I did. The idea of the Kite, an endlessly scrollable area where you can throw apps and widgets and shortcuts sounds kinda cool. But it just doesn't work. If fact, it drove me partially insane. Which is why I probably shouldn't do this, but if you want, you can download the Lite version of Pure Breeze below. Just remember, I can't be held responsible for any medical expenses incurred from trying to remove the memory of this thing from your brain.

Samsung GT-i9300 User Guide Purportedly Leaked, Specs Don’t Make a Whole Lot of Sense

i9300 specs Samsung GT i9300 User Guide Purportedly Leaked, Specs Don't Make a Whole Lot of Sense

The Samsung GT-i9300, oft-rumored to be the Galaxy SIII, appeared this morning in what is said to be an official user guide for the device. The list of specs looks decent on paper, but it doesn't necessarily match-up with what we know to be official for Samsung's next flagship. Last night, we were told by Samsung that the next Galaxy will have a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz, yet this page clearly states 1.5GHz.

After that, we see a mention of a 4.8″ display, but benchmarks from the same device are showing it as either 4.6″ or 4.7″. The camera is said to be 8MP, but again, we have seen 12MP mentioned as well. The rest of it looks semi-standard, only it seems odd that they would mention a sensor as being "Acceleration" rather than the correct term of "Accelerometer."

Oh, and then we have a sketch of the device along with this list of specs. Is that a physical home button? It makes absolutely no sense to include a physical home button when their is an on-screen home key, thanks to Ice Cream Sandwich. I personally owned the Euro, unlocked Galaxy SII and hated every second of the physical home button in the middle of the device. Please Samsung, do not bring it back with next Galaxy.

According to a new rumor, they plan to make up for it by launching a device with a 5″ 1080p display and quad-core Krait Snapdragon processor this fall. Think of it as a Galaxy Note competitor.

Also in this report are a couple of other supposed confirmations that should make you happy. The claim is that Verizon will indeed carry the Galaxy SIII, we just wonder when exactly. Last year, they passed on the Galaxy SII in favor of the Galaxy Nexus and the year before that they released an original Galaxy S device months after others. Maybe they'll get this one right? Third time's a charm?

Lastly, this report claims that Verizon will see "multiple" variations of the RAZR throughout the rest of 2012, one of them as the RAZR HD. The RAZR HD is no secret to readers of DL as we have been on its trail for months now, previously reporting it under its codename of Fighter.

So there you have a rumored roadmap with no dates or time frames other than "fall" for one. Not a lot of surprises other than the HTC device, which we are certainly interested to learn more about if it actually does exist.

Thoughts?
