How can Google Improve the Nexus Q to Get You to Buy One?

google nexus q 650x432 How can Google Improve the Nexus Q to Get You to Buy One?

With Google announcing that retail release of the Nexus Q has been put on hold, we would actually like to thank them for this decision. We've had our Q's since May of this year and personally, I've used mine about 5 times in total. Each of these times were just to show it off to friends, which was then followed by the question, "What does it do?" Well, it doesn't really do much at all actually. Google, being the type of business they are, have seemingly realized this and are now going to give the Nexus Q some added features which will then make it more of an easy sale than just being a black orb that lights up and streams your Play content for $300.

Ultimate Rotation Control is Your Ticket to Auto-Rotating Nexus 7 Home Screens

One issue for some, if you can even call it that, with the Nexus 7 and other newly introduced Android devices, is the lack of an auto-rotate option on home screens. While these devices rotate just fine while in an app, there are those that strongly wish to see them also rotate for landscape fun before launching into apps and other activities. Enter Ultimate Rotation Control, an app that has exploded in popularity over the last week thanks to the launching of the Nexus 7. In fact, if you cruise through the comments, you'll notice that the majority mention Google's new affordable slate.

Google postpones Nexus Q launch, provides free units to the few people that pre-ordered

When Google placed the Nexus Q on sale last week, we joked that there would be no shortages because no one was going to order it. Several tech blogs reported that Google had sold out of the first batch of when the expected ship date was changed, but Google never released any details on how many units were sold.

Now we find out that the launch of the streaming media player has been postponed indefinitely as Google works on "making it even better." The Nexus Q currently

HTC EVO Design 4G gets updated to Android 4.0

The Android 4.0 update for the HTC EVO 3D was a nice surprise (even though HTC did promise to deliver it before the end of the month), so you can imagine how shocked we were when we got the word that Sprint has also started pushing out the Android 4.0 update for the HTC EVO Design 4G.

By now, you should know the drill. Android 4.0 on the HTC EVO Design 4G features HTC's Sense 3.6 UI, Face Unlock, new notifications features, a new camera UI with updated features, improved

On the N7′s big beautiful 7″ display, you can ask that Google Now track your favorite sports teams, show the weather in your current location, tell you directions and the time it will take to arrive at your next appointment, and always have the quickest route home just a fingertip's click away.

Measure your melt with Fitbit Aria Smart Scale

Can a high tech scale help you lose weight? I recently started a journey to slim back down, which started the day I stepped on my digital scale and noticed I was approaching 200 lbs. Over the last month I have made good progress, but I wanted to see if an expensive Wi-Fi scale could add any benefit to my training.

After doing some online research, I decided to go with the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale. I've now been using the device for several weeks and I'm comfortable enough with it to share my experiences. Read on to see if it fits your needs and if I would recommend it to a friend.

The Good

Fast setup: I experienced a minor hiccup with my initial setup (see below), but I still had the Aria up and running in 10 minutes. There is a native desktop app for Windows users, and Mac users can get started with a web based setup. The web based setup requires you to connect directly to the Aria over Wi-Fi and then enter your local Wi-Fi network settings to establish a connection.

Track weight, body fat %, and BMI: Just step on the Aria and it quickly measures your body stats. Results are then automatically synced.

Wi-Fi Uploads: This is the main reason anyone would buy this scale. Aria automatically uploads all your stats to Fitbit.com where you can view them in graphs and tables.

Multi-user support: The Aria scale recognizes up to 8 different users. Each user must be setup on the Fitbit site, and then they are automatically recognized when they step on the scale. Guest users are also supported, but the Aria can only measure their body weight.

Accurate: When using the Aria I saw consistent results that were accurate when compared with other scales and body fat monitors.

fitbit aria black white 630x305 Measure your melt with Fitbit Aria Smart Scale

Stylish design: The Aria is easily one of the nicest looking digital scales I have ever owned. It is available in black or white.

User replaceable batteries: Aria uses four AA batteries. Fitbit doesn't say how long they will last, but at least you can swap them out at any time.

Fitbit ecosystem: Combine the Aria scale with the Fitbit Tracker to see the relation between daily activity and weight loss.

Syncs with other apps: Some of the features in the Fitbit service are limited (like their calorie counter), but thankfully they support syncing up with multiple fitness apps including Lose It!, Endomondo, MyFitnessPal, and others. Fitbit also provides an API that other developers can use to integrate Fitbit data with their app.

Spotify Launches Free Personalized Radio for Android, As Long as You’re in the States

unnamed1 650x318 Spotify Launches Free Personalized Radio for Android, As Long as You're in the States

Spotify was apparently not content with only being one of the largest music streaming services in the States and have now set their sights on the personalized online radio sector. Long dominated by applications like Pandora, the latest update to Spotify brings a free radio section to the application, but it only works if you are in the United States at the moment.

Now, this does not mean that you can access Spotify premium, that still costs $9.99 a month to stream your music from your computer to your phone. However, Spotify's plan may be to lure you in with the free radio and hope you will upgrade later on.

Do any of you pay for Spotify or use other music alternatives?

Will the HTC Rezound See Its Ice Cream Sandwich Update Today?

htc rezound official1 390x650 Will the HTC Rezound See Its Ice Cream Sandwich Update Today?

Folks, today is the last day of July. As you may recall, we were told by HTC that the Rezound should see its Ice Cream Sandwich update in either June or July, so we are quickly running out of time. What we aren't sure about, is if it'll happen today or this week or any time in the near future. The odd thing here, is that Verizon has apparently approved the update, something we first reported last week, but has yet to release it to the public. It could be that some last minute test came up or that they were waiting to get the DROID Charge update out first. Your guess is as good as mine.

You may also remember though, that HTC has posted the official changelog for the update twice now, only to pull it moments later. The first was on June 20 – the second posting was on July 18. If that's not a sign that this thing should be ready, then I don't know what is. In fact, the build that HTC references in their official changelog, is the exact as a leak that dropped in early June.

Any bets on whether or not we see the initial push begin today, so that HTC can meet their deadline?

Yesterday, the official court battle between Apple Inc. and Samsung started off in California. Thanks to these proceedings, a new tablet that Samsung is currently working on has been outed as the "P10" and boy, does it sound impressive so far. As seen in the court document, the tablet will have an 11.8″ WQXGA (2560 x 1600 at 256ppi) display and also sports 4G LTE

A new update has been approved for the DROID Charge this morning, bringing it up to build FP5. While the document above lists out all sorts of changes, it is actually the changelog from the previous FP1 update, only the bullets have been rearranged. We are assuming then that this is nothing more than a minor bug fixer. If you receive it, be sure to let us know of any differences.

The update itself is 19.3MB and will likely rollout to everyone within a week. More.

Samsung Launches Music Hub in the U.S. on the Galaxy S3, Verizon Not Participating as Usual

Samsung announced this morning that their Music Hub service is now available on the Galaxy S3 here in the U.S. It's a "3-in-1 mobile music solution" that lets you upload your music collection to the cloud, stream, and purchase songs from their catalog which is supported by all 4 major record labels. With its introduction, Samsung is giving all Galaxy S3 users a free 30-day trial, which we assume means for their premium package which normally runs $9.99 a month. Once that 30-day trial is up, there is a free service that can be used as well, to purchase music from.

If you are an AT&T or US Cellular customer, you can grab the Music Hub from the Google Play store today and get to jammin'. If you are on Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile, you do not have access to the service…at all. We aren't sure why Sprint and T-Mobile were left out of the fun, but I think we all know why Verizon customers get no love. Do we need to bring up Google Wallet again? What about the 50GB Dropbox promo that was supposed to accompany the Galaxy S3? Yeah, you get the point.

nexus 7 case6 i BLASON Leather Nexus 7 Case has Auto Sleep/Wake, Multi Viewing Angles, and Includes a Stylus for $20

Yesterday, we took a look at the official Nexus 7 case and came away impressed by the quality, but a little less impressed by some missing features (auto sleep/wake would be one major feature missing). As one of our readers has pointed out, there are numerous options sold through Amazon, almost all of which include auto sleep/wake. Many are made with premium leather, but some, like the i-BLASON case we have pictured above, also come with a stylus and have viewing angle support, yet manage to land at the same $19.99 price as the official TPU case. If you are dying to get your hands on a case, we have 3 options listed below, but again, Amazon has more than we can list in one post. The official TPU case looks hot with its Nexus logo, however, you may want more from a case than it can give you.

Verizon Announces the Pantech Marauder at $49, Made for Smartphone Newbies

248184 650x493 Verizon Announces the Pantech Marauder at $49, Made for Smartphone Newbies

The Pantech Maruader first leaked last week as the Star Q, but the specs that accompanied the leak were all sorts of wrong. The device actually has a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, likely the same chipset that is in the Incredible 4G LTE. It also has a 5MP camera, 1GB of RAM, and will be available for $49 on August 2 after a $50 rebate.

Verizon is directing this device at first time smartphone owners, or those that are coming over from having feature phones for years. The UI looks super simple, almost feature phone-esque, but the price is the key here. Not a bad option for those making their first smartphone purchase that aren't planning on using much data with Share Everything. Then again, the Galaxy Nexus can be had for $50 more and is 10x the phone.

Spotify launches free streaming radio for Android

Spotify has long been heralded as one of the best online music platforms out there. It's adoption among mobile users, however, has been limited due to the fact that the service cost $10 per month for mobile access to Spotify's library of songs.

The new Spotify for Android application changes all this, allowing users in the US to create free streaming stations based on a song, artist, or playlist of your choosing similar to Pandora or Slacker radio. Users can create an unlimited number of stations and playlists, and can favorite songs for easy access to them later on. Of course, as with other free services you will be served with adverts on a regular basis, but that's a small price to pay for streaming audio that you don't have to pay for.

Of course, you can still upgrade to a premium account, which will give you the ability to sync all your playlists and songs for offline listening, unlimited skips, as well as immediate access to any song of your choosing, both of which could be well worth the $10 per month for those of you who live in areas without a reliable and quick data connection.

The new Spotify for Android app can be found for free on the Google Play Store. Will you be checking it out now that Spotify has gone free, or will you stick to the likes of Pandora, Slacker, or iHeartRadio?

Official Nexus 7 Accessory Lineup Leaks, POGO Dock and Premium Leather Case Incoming

nexus7dock 650x487 Official Nexus 7 Accessory Lineup Leaks, POGO Dock and Premium Leather Case Incoming

According to leaked slides obtained by Nordic Hardware, the Nexus 7 accessory lineup is about to get a lot more interesting.

You know those pogo pins on the side of the device? Yeah, there is a dock on its way that will take advantage of them. These slides show a $49.99 price tag and an 8/24 release date. The dock has been made to "perfectly-angle" your Nexus 7 for "better movie and photo viewing, browsing, and email." It includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, so that you can hook up speakers, however, it does not appear to have HDMI support. That shouldn't surprise you, though.

Will There be a Galaxy Nexus 2 Made by Samsung? Maybe, but This Concept Will Most Certainly Not be It

galaxy nexus 21 650x551 Will There be a Galaxy Nexus 2 Made by Samsung? Maybe, but This Concept Will Most Certainly Not be It

Every once in a while, we write up a story with one goal – to head off another story that's floating around before it gets out of hand. That's what we are doing today, with this Galaxy Nexus 2 rumor. It goes a little something like this.

One of our favorite sites to browse from time-to-time, Concept Phones, posted up the picture we have included above, calling it the Galaxy Nexus 2. They were clear that it was simply a concept and not real, but a few sites picked it up here and there over the weekend to talk about the possibility which has led to certain religious-based sites (that will remain nameless) thinking that there actually is a Galaxy Nexus 2 on the way. They even attempted to get into details about Google and Samsung partnering up again, and that the device would launch with Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. Get right out of town!

Monday Poll: If Multiple OEMs Produce a Nexus Phone, Whose Would You Buy?

nexus logo purple 650x432 Monday Poll: If Multiple OEMs Produce a Nexus Phone, Whose Would You Buy?

We last asked this back in February, but since then, we have seen reports suggesting that we will have numerous Nexus devices this winter and that there could be as many as 5 partners working closely with Google to produce them. In the past, we had to simply hold out hope that our favorite OEM would produce this year's Nexus phone, but with multiple OEMs potentially joining the party, you have to start thinking about having options for the first time.

Are you disappointed with the Galaxy Nexus or would you want nothing more than to have Samsung produce another? What about HTC and the boundaries they pushed with the One X – could they make the best Nexus? Is it time for Motorola to shine again and produce something that Moto fans can be proud of? Or is it time for someone else to jump into the fold and "Wow!" us? If you had a choice, who would it be and why?

Remaining Alltel customers, you have until January 2013 to get rid of your current phone and pick up one from Verizon. Well, if you want to keep using data that is. At the beginning of next year, around January 10, Verizon will start to shut down the Alltel Data Network that came with their acquisition of the smaller carrier in 2009. By April 2013, they plan to complete the shutdown.

If you have yet to pick up a Verizon phone, know that your Alltel phone will still be able to send texts and make/receive calls, however, your data services will go bye-bye.

0 Google Upgrades Gmail Video Chat to Newer Google+ Hangout Technology

Today, Google is rolling out a revamped face-to-face video chat feature for all Gmail users. Instead of the older peer-to-peer formula that has been in use since 2008, they will now utilize the Google+ Hangout service for all of the video needs, which is a more stable and optimized system. Naturally, Google is going way beyond just being able to video chat. With Hangouts in Gmail, you can watch YouTube videos, share what's on your browser's screen, and of course, dress like a pirate.

Google says that some folks can start using the Hangouts in Gmail today and roll out will continue over the next couple of weeks.

You Can Buy the Nexus 7 Through Amazon, If You Like Overspending for Things

amazon nexus 7 650x259 You Can Buy the Nexus 7 Through Amazon, If You Like Overspending for Things

If you were one of the few waiting for the Nexus 7 to arrive on Amazon, we thought we would let you know that the wait is over. We also thought we should point out that you'll pay more through Amazon than you will any other retailer on the planet. The device retails for $199 (8GB) and $249 (16GB) at places like Staples, Office Depot, Gamestop, and of course, the Google Play store. If you choose to go the Amazon route, you'll pay at least $271 for the 8GB version and $289 for the 16GB version.

At one point, when the 16GB version was sold out across the country, you could have made the argument that purchasing it for $290 would have been worth it. With stock showing back up through Google Play this morning, you'd be foolish to pay more than $250.

Throughout last week, Google released a series of videos to highlight some of the main software features of the Nexus 7. In this latest video, the focus is on video chatting with friends through Google+ Hangouts, only the comments at the YouTube page for this video have turned our attention elsewhere. That would be to the Zombie hand holding the N7 throughout this series.

After a two week period of Google trying to catch up on 16GB Nexus 7 orders, the device is now showing as being back "in stock." Between the 8GB and 16GB versions, the bigger storage option is either the hotter selling of the two or Google was expecting the 8GB to be much more popular and simply manufactured more of it instead.

In our review of the Nexus 7, we tossed out the idea that you may want to go for the 16GB instead, if you plan on downloading a bunch of content to your device. With the 8GB option, you have to remember that 2.5GB or so are taken up by the operating system and that HD movies can land at around another 2.5GB, leaving you with very little space for major gaming titles, music, or other videos.

If the 16GB was the Nexus 7 that you had been holding out for, jump into the Play Store now.

Google Wallet Hacked to Work on Verizon’s Galaxy S3

0 Google Wallet Hacked to Work on Verizon's Galaxy S3

In case you were wondering, Google Wallet is blocked from Verizon's Galaxy S3 just like it was on the Galaxy Nexus. Big Red has their own mobile NFC payment system on the way, called Isis, and would rather you wait to turn your life over to one. Oh wait, they aren't blocking Google Wallet, it's just that it's "different" than other mobile commerce apps. Mmhmm. In other words, they are blocking it for now, until they can work out a licensing deal with Google.

If you were wanting to get in some NFC payment action ahead of time, there is a new hack that will get you up and running and spending at your local NFC-equipped spots. A .zip is available to be flashed by rooted users. From what we can tell, it involves the changing of your current build.prop file, followed by a push of a tweaked Wallet app. The video above is proof that it indeed works.

Beat the heat with Nest Learning Thermostat

Growing up in South Texas, I became used to hot summers and high electricity bills. A winter electricity statement might only run $50, but it could easily climb to $200-300 in the summer months. Studies show that your thermostat controls half your energy bill on average, so it could be a wise investment to purchase a smart thermostat that learns your schedule and provides energy saving tips.

This month I finally decided to purchase the Nest learning thermostat. Last year I got one for my parents and then I read a ton of positive reviews, so I felt I should give it a try as we entered the warmest months in Dallas. Normally I would wait a couple of moths before reviewing a product such as this, but I was so impressed with Nest that I decided it was time to share my thoughts.

The Good

nest install Beat the heat with Nest Learning Thermostat

Fast installation: I installed my Nest thermostat in less than 30 minutes, and I could probably do it in under 10 the next time I move. The package includes a universal mounting brace, screwdriver and screws, and optional wall plates. Videos are provided to help you check compatibility before you purchase and show you how to complete the install if you run in problems. For those that want a professional to install the device, Nest offers a concierge service for $115.

Ease of use: Before I purchased the Nest for our place, we gave one to my parents last Christmas. They had no problems using it and told me they love it. I have found that basic operation is no different than most thermostats. Anyone can operate the Nest.

Build quality: Nest is sleek and stylish. It looks and feels like a high end product. The rotating dial is so smooth and the clicking action feels solid.

nest savings Beat the heat with Nest Learning Thermostat

Estimated savings with Nest.

Saves money: The Nest thermostat has multiple ways to save you energy and cut down on your monthly energy bill. Auto-away allows Nest to turn itself down when you're out so you don't wast energy cooling an empty home. With the help of Airwave, your AC can run up to 30% less. When your home's humidity is low, Nest can turn off your compressor and keep cooling your house by running the fan and blowing air over your cold evaporator coil.

Convenience: Does your wife or significant other always complain about the temperature? With Nest, you will no longer have to climb out of bed in the middle of the night to adjust the thermostat. Just reach for your phone and you can easily turn the temperature up or down. It's also really convenient to turn on your AC a couple of minutes before you get home after being away. Nest learns your schedule within within a week, so no programming is necessary.

Monthly energy reports: I haven't completed my first month yet, but the sample reports look pretty cool. Envery reports include

The Jawbone JAMBOX is a total party in a can

Let's start off with a poll: how many of you use that trick of cupping your hand behind your phone to slightly increase the volume? I find myself doing it just about every time I watch a YouTube video or try to listen to something without headphones. There are some things our phones simply cannot do. Like play loud sounds. Enter the Jawbone JAMBOX The Jawbone JAMBOX is a total party in a can.

IMG 7341 630x420 The Jawbone JAMBOX is a total party in a can

The JAMBOX is a small speaker capable of making big noises. It can hook to your device via Bluetooth or a standard 3.5mm audio cable, runs about 12 hours on its rechargeable battery, and produces the loudest and cleanest sound I've yet to find in a portable speaker.

In my month or so of testing, we've used this speaker at the pool, on a camping trip, while working out, on the patio- almost anywhere we need some background music, this guy can do the trick.

The Good

Big sound in a tiny (and awesome) package: The JAMBOX produces amazingly big sound from a form factor smaller than a can of soda. Inside, there is a pair of proprietary acoustic drivers and a bass radiator, making for nice highs and solid lows. Aside from its trim size, the styling on these things is absolutely unbeatable. They'll look just as comfortable on your desk as it would in a futuristic sci-fi movie.

Build quality: One of the first things you'll notice when handling the JAMBOX is its weight. The second is the texture and quality of materials. The entire package is amazingly well built, including the giant plus and minus buttons on top that make controlling volume a breeze.

It gets better: Connect the JAMBOX to MyTalk, a service provided by Jawbone, to find all the latest updates and personalizations at the touch of a button. You can change the startup and shutdown noises, install new voice-activated apps, and most importantly, make sure your JAMBOX is up to date. How many speakers do you know that are capable of a firmware upgrade that actually add features after purchase?

Color and style options: This may seem like a small one, but time has taught us that color options can play a big role when it comes to purchasing decisions. Jawbone offers the JAMBOX in a variety of color and mesh finishes, as well as a steady stream of limited edition releases (for you ultra-exclusive collectors out there).

The Not-So-Good

Bluetooth leaves something to be desired: While the Bluetooth performs fairly well, I most often find myself playing music over the 3.5mm audio jack. While it usually works just fine, Bluetooth pairing can sometimes take a few extra seconds or can drop off for no reason, but that's more of a knock on Bluetooth in general than the JAMBOX itself.

In a perfect world, it'd be louder: Despite producing amazing sound for its size, I wouldn't mind a few more decibels. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great and I know a speaker of this size can only get so loud, but I sometimes found myself wanting to turn the volume to 11. It's fine for a party with close friends, but it might be a tad underpowered for a full-blown house party. For that, I'd recommend taking a look at the BIG JAMBOX The Jawbone JAMBOX is a total party in a can.

Price: The MSRP is $199, and while you can find it online for around $175 The Jawbone JAMBOX is a total party in a can, it might be too much for some more casual budgets. To be fair, there aren't a ton of speakers this loud and this small to compare it to, but I still feel like some of you are going to rate it as a bit steep.

The Final Word

If you're in the market for a speaker that's as loud as it is stylish and portable, the JAMBOX is for you. If portability and style aren't at the top of your list, you might find more bang with something like a Sonos system. Either way, if you've got the budget, you really can't go wrong when buying a speaker that's worth almost as much as your device itself- they're all going to be loud and nasty.

The JAMBOX really excels in the details. From the box, to the boot-up noise, to the buttons- it's pure class all the way.
